…to sum it all up

Old Man’s Musings

Gone are those days of agility.
Some say you’re approaching senility.
You allow them the thought
That your mind may be wrought
With the lack of mental ability!

Your eyes no longer are bright.
The skin on your body not tight,
You appear absurd
When you babble a word
That to them just can’t be right!

You’re told your hearing is bad.
And it seems at you they get mad
When you’re in a din
And you ask again,
“What was it that you just said?”

Your knees may crackle and creek.
You can, at times feel slightly weak.
But try as you might,
It seems you must fight
To convince that you’re not so meek!

Your shoulders may begin to droop.
Your belt has a smaller loop.
You crave big meal,
But I think that they feel
You’re surviving on a ration of soup!

There are times when you’re happy alone!
You can ignore the ringing phone.
Bu,t because you did that
And there you just sat;
It’s said you can’t hear the tone!

Your shirt may be wrinkled and worn.
Your hair may need to be shorn!
But you really don’t care
To straighten your hair
Each day you arise in the morn!

When you decided to no longer shave,
You’re dismissed with an “oh-well” wave!
The longer it grew,
More it became you
And on blades you really did save!

Embarrassment can show on their faces
When you’re taken to certain places.
To you has it mattered?
You may look a bit tattered;
Still you remember the social graces!

They may even question your sanity.
You couldn’t be part of humanity!!
If you spout out a curse,
They deem you much worse
Because of your apparent profanity!!

If you sat in a park secluded;
From games you must be excluded.
While in the sun you might bask,
They won’t even ask.
Unable …is what they’ve concluded!

Memories are there in your brain.
Most likely that’s where they’ll remain.
 Days of youthful fun
Of interest to none,
Their  loss could’ve been their gain!!

At times you you’re totally ignored,
For you, that isn’t discord.
If one stops to talk
When by you they walk,
You declare it’s a big reward!

When you’re no longer allowed to drive,
That can make you feel less alive.
So that you’re never late
Your faithful mate
Assures you will safely arrive!

You’re carted to doctors galore.
They think you don’t know what for.
But there in your head
You understand what is said,
And the reason to return for more!

You may ache in your shoulder and neck
Almost as if you’ve been in a wreck.
You certainly know
That isn’t so;
It’s in the cards dealt from your deck!

If there’s a task that you must get done,
It’s the opinion of most everyone;
You can’t possibly do it!
So you huff and say screw it;
But grin at how your scheme was won!!

I hasten to say at this time,
If about me you think of this rhyme;
To be content;
One must relent,
And imagine you’ve just reached your prime!!
